Sony warns VAIO Fit 11A laptop owners of battery fire risk

Sony urged customers to stop using a model of its Vaio computers launched in February, saying today there was a risk that the battery would catch fire. Sony said in a statement it had shipped 25,905 of the Vaio Fit 11A in 52 countries since its launch. Sony said three PCs had caught on fire around the battery pack, which was manufactured by Panasonic. It's as yet unclear whether this issue only affects the 11-inch model or if even the 13-inch Vaio Fit is at risk. As you would recall, we thought the Vaio Fit 13A has a great design and build, but it costs too much for its one novelty feature. So it may not be a wise idea to go for the Vaio Fit 13A just yet, till this issue is sorted out. The news comes at a time when Sony has announced plans of selling the VAIO PC business to concentrate on mobiles. According to the deal, Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) will take control of the operation for an undisclosed fee, and Sony will "cease planning, design and development of PC products." Reuters
