Sony SmartWatch updated; gets six new watch faces

Sony is rolling out a new update for its SmartWatch that brings new features, tweaks and other improvements.

In an official blog post, Sony has announced that the SmartWatch now has six new watch faces, and each one comes with a different functionality. To activate the screen, users will have to double tap on it, or use a "my gesture" by moving the watch with a twist of the wrist. Users can also see snippets of their messages, tweets and wall posts, each time they get a notification.

The SmartWatch has been updated with around 200 apps. Sony has added categorised sorting so that users can find what they're looking for. The interface across SmartWatch and Smart Connect has been updated too, and there is QR Code support for easier connection for those using a non-Sony Android phone. Sony claims further that the update has brought better battery level indication to the SmartWatch. Existing SmartWatch users will receive a notification on their Android phone, once it is ready. 

Six new watch faces

In addition to the aforementioned tweaks and updates, Sony is also rolling out some new product features, which includes a better charging cable and new wristbands. The app is available on Google Play.

Sony India launched its SmartWatch in India at Rs 6,299 last year. What do you get for your money? Well, for starters you get a snazzy looking watch with an OLED colour display that comes with different colour straps so you can match it to your personality. More importantly, it syncs with your Android phone and lets you read SMS, email, calendar reminders as well as social networking updates from Twitter and Facebook. You can even reject and mute calls and receive one through the Bluetooth headset.

The watch is compatible with other Android phones as well, so you don’t have to own a Sony branded phone to use it. The syncing is done over Bluetooth 3.0. Since the phone is also based on Android, it should be possible to port other apps as well to it other than the ones provided by Sony.

To be able to use the SmartWatch,  users will have to install the SmartWatch app on their Android smartphone. The app can be used to edit settings, enable or disable apps, select watch interface and find other apps developed for SmartWatch on Google Play.
