Patent shows Google may have the answer to making Glass less awkward looking

It's been over two years since we first saw Google Glass, but one thing that's certainly not changed since the initial unveiling is that thery are still quite awkward looking when in use. There's a reason Glass has not yet hit the mainstream since it's not the right look for every one at this stage. However, a new patent granted to Google last week hints that could be changing fast. Glass Almanac got the scoop on Google's patent application which shows a hardware revision that may make Glass a lot more palatable for ordinary tastes. The patent, (D710,928) describes a “wearable display device” and the attached images show what look like a normal pair of glasses, with a display on the inside. Even though these glasses look chunkier than ordinary ones, they do improve the acceptability factor of Glass immeasurably. Of course, there's no way of knowing whethere this is indeed the final look of Glass's hardware revision, if at all there's one. [caption id="attachment_230010" align="alignnone" width="640"] Is this what the next Google Glass will look like?[/caption] The new design puts the external prism, which is the display on Google Glass, closer to the face by moving it to the inside frame of the glasses. The chunky sides of the frame would likely hold all the internal wiring and the components required to make Glass work like it does today. The patent was granted to Google engineer Mitchell Heinrich August 12 this year.  While it's not immediately clear from the above image, the right side has what looks like a camera cut-out, though that could just be a design element. However, seeing as this is a patent application, that seems less likely (companies are not known to show design elements on patent applications). Without having any more firm details at the moment, we can only speculate, but it does look like Google is working on making Glass less obstrusive in the future.
