NVIDIA would like Tegra on the iPad

NVIDIA’s Jen-Hsun Huang was answering questions at the AsiaD conference and Engadget was there to cover it. He was answering questions about the future of NVIDIA Tegra and was excited about Microsoft coming out with Windows for the ARM architecture. He said he would be glad to have devices (tablets) that weren’t PCs running Windows using the architecture.  NVIDIA’s competition in this day and age is different - it isn’t Intel. According to Jen-Hsun, NVIDIA is now focusing on visual and mobile computing where Qualcomm is their bigger competitor. The indirect competition was actually from the companies that didn’t use NVIDIA chips on their products. He emphasised that 70 percent of tablets that aren’t iPads used NVIDIA chips as well as 13 smartphone models.

At some point in time, different products such as tablets, phones and PMPs would need different kinds of processors unlike those today. This was to say that there was a need for a separate chip tailored specifically for tablets, one specifically for smartphones and so on. He also said that going against Intel in the past was a bad idea. Apple has used NVIDIA hardware on their notebooks in the past but Jen-Hsun said he would like to see more. He hoped that in the future, NVIDIA would be able to plant a tablet chip on the Apple iPad.
