The next generation smartphone from Apple is set to be unveiled in the next few days. While all eyes will be focused on this handset, the iPhone 5 will have to share the stage with another product announcement, the new range iPods. According to a report by 9to5Mac, the author Mark Gurman states that at the Apple event, a range of iPods will also be unveiled.

The report states, “We believe that there will be at least two new/updated iPod lines and possibly a third. All these new lines will come in multiple colors, one of the lines will come in two size capacities, and the other two lines will come in a single storage capacity. With the current iPod nanos and iPod shuffles both available in multiple colors (and with the nano currently available in two capacities and the shuffle in one), we think it is likely that new iPod nanos and iPod shuffles are launching next week. However, it is possible that there is a third line as well (that, too, comes in multiple colors). With the iPod touch currently available in two colors and three capacities (black/white, 8GB, 32GB, 64GB), we don’t believe the iPod touch is the third line that comes in multiple colors.” Features a display measuring 4.1-inches

New generation of iPods coming soon

The website however does not know for certain if Apple will unveil the new iPod touch at the event next week or they will hold it off till a later date.

A report had surfaced in July which indicated that Apple was working on the 2012 edition of the iPod touch and it will have 4 inch LCD which is the same size with coming iPhone 5. CPU or other spec is considered to be same with iPhone 4S, and has different back-case design. Like last year’s edition, this 2012 iPod touch is expected to be launched in white and black options.

This will come as some interesting news for those wanting an upgrade as a larger display means more room for viewing content such as games as well as videos. The iPod touch, over the years has become a major rival to other portable gaming consoles such as the PSP or even the recently launched PS Vita and this is due to the wide variety of games available in the App Store. Another major advantage the iPod touch has over its rivals is that the games available are a lot cheaper than those available for portable gaming consoles.

The report also goes on to state that there will also be a hole at the back and this will not be for the camera but something else. The sources informed the website that they had no idea what this hole was for. However, by taking a calculated guess, in all likelihood, this hole could be for an additional microphone that will enhance the clarity of one’s voice while using FaceTime or other video calling services such as Skype. Since there is no confirmation about this, we will know more once this portable media player gets officially announced.

Another point the website touched upon was the size of the display. If the iPod touch does indeed have a display measuring 4-inches, then besides the fact that it will be the same-sized display as the iPhone 5, it will also feature an aspect ratio of 16:9 and not the 3:2 ratio found on existing iPhones and iPod touch devices. If Apple does intend to launch the iPod touch with this aspect ratio and keeping the Retina Display characteristics in mind, then we can expect the upcoming PMP to feature a resolution of 1136 x 640, the same that is expected on the iPhone 5.

The back casing of the iPod touch is really interesting as it is expected to feature a design change that does not have the aluminium back.
