LG has entered the VR headset space with its LG 360 VR in the US for $200. The LG 360 VR, which was announced along with the LG G5 at the Mobile World Congress this year, is similar to Samsung Gear VR in terms of graphical capability. The device is compact and lightweight. It is not the same grade of VR experience as the Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive though. The HTC 360 VR does not use dedicated external face tracking devices. As the entire Virtual Reality experience is packaged inside a standalone device, this gadget is portable. There is a six axis gyroscope and a proximity sensor.A distinguishing feature for the LG 360 VR is that it does not require a smartphone to be inserted into its body. Instead there is a 920 x 720 pixel LCD screen for each eye. The displays are 1.88-inch each, and have have a pixel density of 639 pixels per inch. The device tethers to a mobile phone over the USB type C port. The only phone supported in this incipient LG VR ecosystem is the LG G5. The only other device in the ecosystem as of now is the LG 360 CAM. There is some content on offer including 3D games, adventure sport videos, concerts and sporting events. YouTube 360 videos are also available. Google is rumoured to be working on a similar device, and it is expected to be announced in the upcoming Google I/O.
