I know I’ve not been too fond of 3D viewing, but this is something that’s really different and exciting. Sources say that Italian Broadcaster, Mediaset has launched what seems to be the world’s first 3D broadcast service. The service is known as 3VOD and runs on Motive’s Bestv set top box, which gives users the chance to select from around fifty movies. Earlier, 3D TV was limited to high bandwidth and cable services, as it is twice the size of regular 2D content. However, this is probably going to open the floodgates and give a lot of other broadcasters a chance to do the same. Slowly, but surely, I’m sure more will join this race.

How bad do you want to watch this movie again?

3VOD is not your typical video on demand, as it doesn’t have a very wide variety of choices. The movies are also not streamed to the set-top box in real time. Instead, the data moves in small amounts to the hard drive of the set top box and gets played off it. This way, there are no latency or buffering issues involved.

Well, this is all good if you’re living in Italy, but I still say that the hype surrounding 3D has been blown out of proportion and we still have quite a long way to go here.
