Is the PlayStation 3 Headed for a Price Drop?

That Sony’s PlayStation 3 gaming console needed a price drop was clear as day for everyone to see, but we expected to hear about it at E3, or somewhere around that time. However, the price drop seems to be on its way now, with Sony hoping to stifle some of Nintendo’s 3DS sales. The 3DS has a European release date of March 25, and in a bid to reduce the handheld’s sales and increase the anticipation for their own Next Generation Portable, Sony seem to have dropped the PlayStation 3’s price rather heavily. In the UK the PS3’s recommended retail price is 255GBP, which is around Rs. 19,000 – very close to the MRP of the 120GB SKU in India (Rs. 19,999).

Now cheaper?

However, retailers like Amazon, HMV and Blockbuster have apparently slashed prices across the board to GBP196 (~Rs. 14,500), GBP179.99 (~Rs. 13,250) and GBP164.99 (~Rs. 12,000) respectively. So if a price drop is indeed coming, will India see prices like that too, considering our prices are based off the European prices?

Hopefully we’ll hear something official about it from Sony over at GDC or E3. An unhackable SKU too, maybe?
