Image of the iPad 3 Retina Display surfaces

Ever since word of a successor to the iPad 2 surfaced, people took to the forums to voice their opinions of what they wanted to feature in the upcoming tablet. The most prominent of these cravings was the use of a Retina Display on the slate, just how Apple have incorporated a Retina Display on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Over the past several weeks, there have been numerous reports indicating that Apple will launch a tablet with a Retina Display, but there was no actual, visual confirmation regarding the same. However, as per a report by MacRumors, they have a panel in their possession and they state that the upcoming iPad will indeed feature a resolution of 2048 x 1536.

The pixel count is twice as more

As per the report, they have examined the display under a microscope to determine the pixel count. They say that to the naked eye, the display looks similar to the iPad 1 and the iPad 2. But under the microscope, the display appears a lot smaller, than those found on the iPad 2, which they state is precisely one quarter the size. They go on to say, “Since we only had a raw iPad 3 display with no method to power it, taking high quality photos of the pixels was difficult. Still, even with the relatively poor lighting, you can easily make out the pixels on each display (made up of red, green and blue elements). We highlighted a cluster of 4 pixels (2x2) from the iPad 2 to compare it to the same area on the iPad 3. On the iPad 3, the same cluster was occupied by 16 pixels (4x4) -- exactly twice the resolution in each direction.”

They end by stating that the display of the iPad 3 should feature a full resolution of 2048 x 1536, which is double of that found on the iPad 2, which has a full resolution of 1024 x 768. The new screen with this resolution would be able to display images a lot better, in terms of clarity, as compared to previous generation iPads.
