PowerVR GPU making company wants to bring virtual reality to low-end Android devices

You might not be familiar with Imagination Technologies, but it is quite popular in the smartphone hardware as it makes GPUs for Apple iPhones. A report now claims that the company wants to bring high-quality VR experiences to low-end Android smartphones.Apart from Apple, Imagination Technologies has been providing GPUs to a few Android manufacturers,  but the company wants to expand further. It is planning to bring its latest PowerVR Series8XE Plus GPU to Android handsets priced between $200 (Rs 13,000 approx) and $400 (Rs 27,000 approx). VR adoption is increasing and the company wants to tap in to the market. While Android devices supporting Google’s new Daydream platform are priced higher due to the powerful GPUs and high-resolution displays, the affordable range relies on Google Cardboard which isn't a very good experience.The Series8XE Plus could potentially bring better graphics to low-end smartphones as it is capable of handling full HD video at 60fps which is important for a good VR experience on handsets. The company also claims that the Series8XE Plus also provides improved mobile gaming and video experiences and is up to four times faster than its predecessor, especially when gaming.While the GPU is expected to arrive on Android smartphones starting next year, the main focus with Series8XE Plus will be to improve the quality of pixels and add features like HDR (high-dynamic range), add depth to the quality of colors and pictures, and to render much better pixels.
