Galaxy S Tab leak hints at rebranding for Samsung’s tablet portfolio

Samsung is about to change the game when it comes to Android tablets. The Korean manufacturer has quite the stranglehold over the smartphone market, but trails Apple's iPad mini and the Nexus 7 in the 7-inch tablet arena. Samsung recently slashed the prices of its current 7-inch Galaxy Tabs in India, after the official entry of Nexus 7 through the Google Play Store. However, the 10-inch market is still dominated by the iPad and lower-cost tablets running Android.

Just like the naming scheme, Samsung will carry forward the design language of the current smartphone flagship, the Galaxy S4, which was launched last month. From the images leaked of the tablet, it looks a lot like the Galaxy Note 8.0, complete with a physical home button and two capacitive buttons on either side of it. Overall, the design reminds us of the Galaxy Note 8.0, which was announced earlier this year - the curved edges and the presence of physical button are obvious similarities. The model numbers of the tablet variants are supposedly GT-P8200, GT-P8210 and GT-P8220.

According to the leaked spec sheets, Samsung will include the high-end Exynos 5410 Octa SoC in the Galaxy S Tab, which will bring the same dual quad-core CPU setup as the Galaxy S4. The two processors will be a quad-core 1.6GHz ARM-Cortex A15 and a quad-core 1.2GHz ARM-Cortex A7. The tablet will reportedly ship with the PowerVR SGX 544MP3 GPU and will come with 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM.

As rumoured earlier, the Galaxy S Tab will come with an ultra high-res display, competing with the current iPad. It will be based on the display of the Nexus 10, but could very well be a Super AMOLED display, unlike the PLS LCD on the Google tablet. A Super AMOLED display in this size would make it a first in the industry. Previously, the largest Super AMOLED display in Samsung’s portfolio was the short-lived Galaxy Tab 7.7.

The Galaxy S Tab will come with a massive 9000 mAh lithium-ion battery, which should provide enough juice for long usage. The tablet is expected to be unveiled at IFA in September, but we cannot rule out an earlier unveiling now that pictures of the device have leaked.
