Firefox browser is now available in Tamil

The efforts of the members of the Free Software Foundation (FSF) in Tamil Nadu have borne fruit; several users in the state will be now able to access the Firefox browser in their native tongue – Tamil.

The navigation bars, settings, history, tools and other instructions on the browser will all be in Tamil. Prakash, a part of the five-member team, said, “There is no need for a Tamil keyboard, and keyboard shortcuts will take you to a Tamil browsing experience.”

If you think this one’s for you, then you can download it right away. Install the browser by downloading a plug-in for Tamil from the official Mozilla site – Home > Firefox > Languages.

The service was to be launched at an event today. An excerpt from the official announcement reads: “We will be officially launching the service at a function in Chennai today. The launching event is being organised along with the Mozilla Foundation," said an official release from the FSFTN.

The entire project reportedly was coordinated and acknowledged by the Mozilla Foundation.

Interestingly, FSFTN is also organising an 8-day programme (September 14 – September 22) to celebrate Software Freedom Week and Internet Freedom Week. As part of the celebrations, colleges and students across the state of Tamil Nadu will be treated to technical sessions and a campaign through the engineering colleges in the city by FSFTN volunteers. The date for the grand finale is September 22.
