Facebook plans to nudge its way into the streaming TV market, developing TV app: Report

After its big push for live streaming and 360-degree video, Facebook is now reportedly planning to nudge its way into the streaming TV market.A report in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) indicates that Facebook is developing its own app for streaming TV boxes, including the Apple TV. The report adds that Facebook is looking to license “long-form TV-style content” and includes everything from sports to shows to entertainment.Little else has been revealed of Facebook’s plans.As Market Watch notes, this is part of Facebook’s efforts to making it a “video-first” company. It’s sources suggest that the app will be a “home for [Facebook’s] video content.”Nobody knows exactly what Facebook’s plans for the TV app are like and whether we’ll see our News Feed in video format or something like that. WSJ’s sources note that this might not be the case, however.User-generated video might reside alongside premium, TV-style content and it is inevitable that Facebook’s ads will make their way to the big screen in some form or the other. Engadget points out that these TV-style ads might earn Facebook more revenue than the regular News Feed ads.The WSJ report does suggest that Facebook has been working on a dedicated TV app for Facebook for years.
