Epsilon Mail Breach Spreads

Marketing firm Epsilon recently had someone break into its e-mail system and subsequently hack it. Epsilon is known for its permission based e-mail marketing and database hosting services. After learning about the hack in its e-mail system, Epsilon had most of its clients notified. Epsilon however, claims that only a small chunk of its database was compromised.

However, over the course of the hacking procedure, several different instances came to light. Some corporations found out that it was only a small section of the e-mail addresses that was compromised. Some corporations like Marriott Rewards and Ritz-Carlton Rewards were in for a rude shock when they discovered that the rewards points were disclosed, along with names and e-mail addresses of the users.

The whole episode reached a serious high when more and more names kept entering the affected list. Some names include - JPMorgan Chase, Capital One, Marriott Rewards, McKinsey Quarterly, US Bank, Citi, Ritz-Carlton Rewards, Brookstone, Walgreens, The College Board, and the Home Shopping Network (HSN).

Epsilon, and the affected companies are going to great extents informing and alerting users to be wary of fake e-mails. However, fears of people falling prey to checking mails and clicking links from corporations, especially from banks, with their details is giving them sleepless nights.
