Bethesda moving on from Skyrim to new projects

Bethesda has announced that it is moving on from its latest game—The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim—on to other projects. Because of this, Dragonborn is the last piece of DLC that Skyrim got, as the company won't be developing for the open-world fantasy RPG anymore. The company made the announcement on its website where it said that it would be moving on to other projects. The most likely outcome from this move is a new Fallout game.

"For the last year and a half we’ve been working on new content for Skyrim; from the game updates, Creation Kit, Steam Workshop, Kinect support, to DLCs. Parts of our team have also been in pre-production on our next major project, and that game is at the point where it requires the studio’s full attention to make it our biggest and best work yet," said the company on its website. "Even though we’re moving on, we’ll still have minor updates to Skyrim as needed. We’ve invested so much of ourselves into Skyrim and will never truly say goodbye to it."

A new Fallout game has been long overdue, since the last game in the series, Fallout: New Vegas, came out in 2010, and Fallout 3 came out in 2008. A new Fallout game would presumably be based on the same game engine as Skyrim. It will be interesting to see what the game will look like with the considerably more powerful graphics engine.

Say goodbye to the Dragonborn

Back in January, the voice actor for Fallout 3's radio station Galaxy News Radio, Erik Todd Dellums, had teased a new Fallout game over Twitter. "To all my #Fallout3 and #ThreeDog fans: There may be more of the Dog coming! Fingers crossed!" said the tweet. He later confirmed that Bethesda had given him permission to tease the next game, so Fallout 4 may be closer than anyone expected: "@ToastTheRabbit How was that for a tease! I was given permission to release that tease, so fingers crossed." The company itself also may make an official announcement soon.

There were rumours last year that the next game in the series—Fallout 4—would be set in the Boston area after scouts from Bethesda were spotted checking out the area from MIT.

The last game in the series was Fallout: New Vegas, which was a spin-off of Fallout 3 and developed by Obsidian. While Fallout 3 took place in the area surrounding Washington DC, dubbed the Capital Wasteland in the game, Fallout: New Vegas took a different approach and based the game in the Nevada desert area in and around Las Vegas, which is closer in setting to the classics - Fallout and Fallout 2.

Fallout 3 starts in Vault 101 where you live with your father. You grow up relatively normally until the day that your father decides to leave. With everyone in the vault trying to capture and interrogate you, you decide that it would be best if you escaped and looked for your dad.

The Fallout series consists of RPGs set in a post-apocalyptic America. The apocalypse was caused by a new World War, and humanity was driven to building and living in vaults to protect themselves from the nuclear holocaust. The game is famous for its overall serious story, but flashes of tongue-in-cheek humour and the strange technological aesthetic, as in-universe, miniaturisation was never discovered. This leads to powerful hardware that is still huge.
