AMD barely launched their latest Southern Islands GPU, the HD 7970 and we already have news about their forthcoming project, codenamed ‘Sea Islands’. The news doesn’t come from AMD, however, as they’ve refused to comment on this. This leaked from an ex-employee of AMD, named Alexander Shternshain. He was an MTS Design Engineer at AMD who worked on previous GPUs like Evergreen, Northern Islands, Fusion APUs as well as Southern Islands and the upcoming Sea Islands.Radeon HD7000 will only come in 2012

Sea Islands, in fact directly refers to a chin of islands on the Atlantic Coast of USA. We could possibly expect chips from different price segments to correspond to the individual islands in that region. If what he says in his Linkedin profile is indeed true, then we should expect early prototypes to start showing up around October, this year, followed by an official announcement in either November or December. The new chip will most likely be built using the 28nm fabrication process and on their new GCN architecture.
