2019 iPhones to have lighter and cheaper touch-integrated OLED screens: Report

Samsung has been supplying the OLED panels used in the iPhone X, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max since last year. The production cost of the iPhones has shot up because of those OLED panels which made them quite expensive for the end users. Now Samsung has offered to reduce the cost of OLED panels that are currently being used in the iPhone XS and XS Max.[caption id="attachment_5467731" align="alignnone" width="1024"]

Image: tech2/Omkar Patne[/caption]This new OLED panel from Samsung is called the 'Y-Octa' and is touch-integrated display as per a report by Korean news publication website ETnews. This type of display will allow Apple to make thinner and lighter iPhones in the future. The report has stated that at least one of the 2019 lineup of iPhones is expected to have it. The likes of the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 are already using this type of display.Also, this is not the first time Samsung has approached Apple for using the touch-integrated displays in the new iPhones.As per the report, an industry official said, "A senior Samsung Display representative visited Apple in March to propose the supply of touch-integrated OLED panels."Initial supplies for this type of display technology are said to be constrained and only the highest end model of the 2019 iPhones will have this OLED panel. As production increases, we will be seeing this display technology used in perhaps all OLED models of future iPhones.
