Meta expands 13+ content settings for teen accounts across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger

Last year, Meta defaulted teens into a new 13+ content setting to ensure they see age-appropriate content by default. Alongside it, the company also introduced a stricter setting called Limited Content.

Expanding on the 13+ account settings globally across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, the updated age settings are designed to hide content that is inappropriate for teens in areas such as Feed and Reels, while also limiting teens' ability to interact with profiles, Pages, Groups, and Events that primarily post age-inappropriate content.

On Messenger, the default 13+ setting limits teens' ability to view links to inappropriate Facebook content or chat with accounts that primarily share inappropriate content on social media.

A New Way to Help Prevent Teens From Repeatedly Seeing Certain Types of Content

Meta has pointed out that certain posts about nutrition or fitness may be helpful, but it aims to balance the amount of such content teens are exposed to. As a result, the company is testing ways to prevent teens from seeing too many similar posts repeatedly.

An independent safety stress-testing team, "Alice," evaluated Instagram Teen Accounts by comparing them with competing platforms and age-rated content standards. The analysis found that Instagram's default teen settings exposed users to significantly less mature content—about 68% less than a competing platform—while the stricter Limited Content setting reduced exposure by up to 96%.

The review also found that Instagram blocked mature search terms more effectively and offered strong default protections, including restrictions on comments and content settings without parental approval.

While the safeguards were generally found to be effective, the review identified a few gaps, particularly around emerging trends such as risky stunts and viral challenges that were not yet covered by existing policies. Meta said these issues were quickly addressed by updating its detection systems and expanding content restrictions for teens.

The findings reinforced that Instagram Teen Accounts provide stronger protections compared with competing platforms, while also highlighting the need for continuous updates to keep pace with evolving online risks.
