As Apple prepares to roll out a more capable version of Siri that can seamlessly perform multiple tasks across its ecosystem, Amazon is reportedly working on an even more advanced upgrade for Alexa. The new AI-powered assistant is expected to handle complex, multi-step requests, marking Amazon's biggest step yet into the rapidly evolving AI agent race.

According to internal planning documents reviewed by Business Insider, Amazon is developing a new Alexa project codenamed "Moonraker." The upgraded platform is designed to handle more complex, multi-step tasks for users, moving beyond simple voice commands and one-off requests.

The update would further expand Alexa+, Amazon's AI-powered assistant, bringing it closer to fully agentic AI. Amazon has been working on a comprehensive Alexa overhaul for several years, delaying its rollout multiple times before expanding availability in the US earlier this year. Business Insider previously reported that internal beta testing uncovered issues including hallucinations and inconsistent responses.

During the company's annual shareholder meeting, CEO Andy Jassy said customers are interacting with Alexa+ twice as much as before and placing inline orders three times more frequently. He added that "Alexa is still early in its journey to be the world's best personal assistant."

New capabilities

According to the Business Insider report, Moonraker will introduce support for multi-request interactions, allowing users to ask multiple questions or issue several prompts in a single conversation. The redesigned assistant will be capable of completing multiple related actions within a single interaction, making conversations with Alexa feel significantly more natural and efficient.

The move would bring Alexa closer to AI assistants from companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, all of which have introduced agentic AI systems capable of browsing the web and completing complex, multi-step workflows on behalf of users.

However, the upgrade is expected to come with a hefty price tag. Internal documents reportedly project that Moonraker could incur GPU costs exceeding $100 million in 2026, with some proposals suggesting the project be delayed or scaled back to ease spending pressures. The documents also indicate that Amazon is preparing hundreds of Nvidia GPUs to power Moonraker while relying on an Anthropic Claude Sonnet model for advanced reasoning and visual response capabilities. If successful, the project could become Amazon's most ambitious attempt yet to transform Alexa from a voice assistant into a true AI agent.
