Angry Birds creator Rovio to establish new studio in London; to focus on MMOs

Rovio, the creators of Angry Birds has announced the opening of a brand new studio in London. This studio will focus on the development of massively multiplayer online (MMO) mobile games.It’s hard to believe that Angry Birds first made its debut eight years ago. Since then, the company has seen its fortunes rise and fall over time and it’s yet to release a new intellectual property (IP) that’s as catchy as Angry Birds.The franchise itself has been on the wane for a long time now, but the recent The Angry Birds Movie was quite a success, netting Rovio around $350 million in revenue.The company’s venture into the MMO space makes sense, especially when you consider that that’s where all the money is. A quick glance at the top grossing titles on the App Store and Play Store throws up MMOs like Clash Royale, Clash of Clans, Game of War and more.Rovio currently operates four studios, three in Finland and one in Stockholm.VentureBeat reports that Rovio is looking to hire 8 people next year, but will rely on a “collaborative team” of 20 members. The announcement will be made at PocketGamerConnects, London.Why London? Rovio sees London as the world’s cultural centre and has a deep respect in the city’s “breadth and depth of talent”.
