Ministry of Road Transport and Highways allows use of digitised vehicle documents

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways earlier this week announced a new Standard Operating Procedures for presenting vehicle documents for inspection.Vehicle owners can now present their documents like the certificate of registration, vehicle insurance, vehicle fitness and permit, driving license, a certificate for pollution under check and other relevant documents in a digitised form.[caption id="attachment_5782831" align="alignnone" width="1280"]

Image: Reuters[/caption]These documents can be accessed via applications like 'Digilocker' and 'mParivahan' and can be presented when asked for.Enforcement agencies can simultaneously access these details from the eChallan app to verify their originality. These have the date of online verification of the vehicle and its licence status.This move is likely to help both authorities and vehicle owners by negating the need to handle paperwork. This should also improve transparency in such interactions.These operating procedure will be implemented to ensure compliance with the provisions of rule 139 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
