Apple supplier Foxconn in early talks to set up first facility in North India in Noida

Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn is in early discussions to acquire 300 acres of land along the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh to set up its first facility in northern India, according to people familiar with the matter.

The proposed site falls under the jurisdiction of the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), a key location that links Greater Noida with Agra and provides proximity to the upcoming international airport at Jewar.

"This facility has the potential to be slightly bigger than its upcoming facility in Bengaluru, which is set to become the company's second-largest globally," The Economic Times quoted a person familiar with the developments as saying. The specific products to be manufactured at the new site have not yet been finalised, and discussions with Indian authorities are ongoing.

Economic Times cited a second person as saying that the land under consideration is close to a 50-acre site already allotted to a joint venture between HCL and Foxconn for an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) unit. That project is currently awaiting government approval.

"The Indian government proposed 300 acres for a Foxconn Industrial Park project last year," the second source was quoted as saying. "Discussions are at an early stage and there are no plans regarding any specific products or customers yet."

Strategic move amid global shifts

The potential expansion in Uttar Pradesh comes as Foxconn looks to diversify its global operations amid rising geopolitical tensions and shifting trade dynamics, including tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Foxconn already operates facilities in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana. It has reportedly scaled down operations in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

India's rising role in global supply chains is making it an attractive hub for electronics exports.

Foxconn has significantly ramped up its operations in India. The company aims to produce 25 to 30 million iPhones annually in India — more than double last year's output.

During his 2023 visit to India, Foxconn Chairman Young Liu said the company's next growth phase would focus on sectors beyond smartphones, including information and communication technology, electric vehicles, energy, and digital health.

"Definitely, we want to move up the value chain as much as we can in India," Liu said at the time.
