Gukesh, Vaishali could enjoy home support in World Championship as AICF pushes to bring high-profile event to India

India has been on a rapid rise in the chess community, with R Vaishali coming off a historic victory in the 2026 Candidates tournament and acquiring an opportunity to compete in the Women's World Championship final against Ju Wenjun. D Gukesh, the reigning world champion, will also defend his title in the grandest chess competition against Uzbekistani GM Javokhir Sindarov.

The Indian presence is stronger than ever in the World Championship across both categories this year, with a challenger and a defender in both title matches. The All India Chess Federation is also attempting to bring the prestigious summit clash to India.

AICF to push for World Championship in India

AICF Head of Operations AK Verma has revealed that the federation is actively trying to bring the World Chess Championship to India, saying they will bid for the hosting rights. He further acknowledged the game's booming presence in the country and expressed pride that two Indians will feature in both categories of the historic event.

“Of course, we will try to bring it to India. We will be doing the bidding. We are very happy and proud that two Indians, in both categories, are going to fight for the World Championships. Chess is booming in India, and we are lucky that both Gukesh and Vaishali will be playing. It really is amazing and gives immense pleasure to all chess players, chess lovers, and all Indians,” AK Verma said, as quoted by The Hindu.

How India missed out in 2024

Back in 2024, Chennai was a genuine contender to host the World Championship in 2024, with FIDE officials visiting the city and reviewing the venue before they chose Singapore as the host nation.

The AICF head of operations said that, despite being ready to pay, Singapore enticed FIDE with better sponsorships, and their decision had upset the AICF.

The FIDE is yet to announce the date and location for the World Chess Championship Final. India remains on the hunt as a potential host, with Chennai touted as the host city.
