There is a brief window every year when India's most beautiful rainy-season destinations are lush, dramatic and surprisingly uncrowded.

The waterfalls have started flowing, the hills are turning emerald green and the air carries the scent of wet earth. Yet the large crowds that typically descend during school holidays and peak monsoon weekends have not fully arrived.
