The secret to vitamin D under fur, wool and feathers
Fur, feathers and wool may seem like barriers to sunlight, but nature has a surprisingly effective workaround.

A sheep standing in a field on a sunny day may not seem very different from a person sitting in the park. Both need vitamin D, a nutrient essential for healthy bones. While humans require sunlight to reach bare skin in order to produce it, many animals spend their lives covered in fur, wool or feathers.
At first glance, that appears to present a problem. Heavy clothing can reduce vitamin D production in people, so why does a thick fleece not have the same effect on a sheep?
Some carnivores, including domestic cats and dogs, obtain much of their vitamin D from their diet. For them, food provides a reliable source of the nutrient, reducing the need to produce it through sunlight exposure.
More than skin deep
For many other animals, however, sunlight still plays an important role. Fur, wool and feathers are coated with natural oils that contain compounds involved in vitamin D production. For years, scientists believed animals obtained much of this vitamin by grooming and swallowing those oils.
Research suggests that theory explains only part of the story. Studies of sheep, cattle and birds indicate that ingesting these oils contributes relatively little to their overall vitamin D levels. Instead, the animals appear to produce most of it simply by spending time outdoors.
Unlike human clothing, coats of fur, wool and feathers do not form a complete barrier to ultraviolet radiation. Some sunlight can penetrate through to the skin, where vitamin D production takes place. As a result, many animals are able to benefit from sunshine without exposing large areas of bare skin.
The finding highlights an important difference between human-made coverings and the coats that evolved in other vertebrates. Fur and feathers help animals stay warm and protected from the elements while still allowing enough sunlight through to support one of the body's essential nutrients.
Winter's hidden deficiency
For many people, vitamin D becomes a seasonal concern. During the winter months, shorter days and colder weather often mean less time outdoors, while coats, scarves and long sleeves leave little skin exposed to sunlight. In countries with long winters, vitamin D levels can drop significantly as a result.
The problem is particularly pronounced at higher latitudes, where the sun sits lower in the sky and produces less of the ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation needed for vitamin D synthesis. Even on bright winter days, there may not be enough UVB reaching the skin for the body to make meaningful amounts of the nutrient.
This is why health authorities in several countries recommend vitamin D supplements during winter, especially for people who spend most of their time indoors or have limited sun exposure. Deficiency has been linked to weakened bones and muscles, making adequate vitamin D an important part of overall health.
Against that backdrop, animals present an interesting contrast. A person wrapped in layers may struggle to produce enough vitamin D, yet a sheep can spend all winter beneath a thick fleece and still maintain healthy levels. Understanding how animals manage this feat has helped scientists better appreciate the complex relationship between sunlight, skin and the natural coverings that evolved to protect it.
