Serena Williams's Wimbledon return came with a $3 million ring and a matching manicure

The 23-time Grand Slam winner returned to Centre Court after four years away, and her hands ended up stealing as much attention as her comeback

Serena Williams walked back onto Centre Court on June 30, her first Wimbledon singles match since 2022, entering on a wildcard after accepting the tournament's eighth and final spot on the eve of qualifying. She lost to 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint, pushing the match to a third set before falling.

It was, by most accounts, exactly the kind of return fans had been waiting for, right down to Williams forcing extra sets against a player twenty-four years her junior. But by the time she left the court, most of the conversation online had shifted from the scoreline to her hands.

The ring that did the talking

Williams played wearing her engagement ring from husband Alexis Ohanian, the Reddit co-founder she married in 2017. Estimates on the ring vary by outlet; some put the oval-cut centre stone at around 12 carats and the ring's value near $2 million, others closer to 14 carats and $3 million. It's consistently ranked among the most expensive celebrity engagement rings in circulation, alongside pieces owned by Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian.

The design has evolved since Ohanian proposed in 2016: the original plain gold band and smaller accent stones have since been swapped out for a pavé setting.

A manicure built to match

What turned the moment properly viral, though, was the manicure sitting right next to the ring.

Williams' nails were done in a metallic silver chrome base, medium length and rounded, with oversized crystal accents on each finger, a mix of clear stones and pops of canary yellow, and a hammered chrome finish reserved for both thumbs. The effect, several outlets pointed out, was less like nail art and more like she'd had a smaller version of her own engagement ring fitted onto every fingertip.

It fits a pattern for Williams, who is a certified nail technician herself and has long treated Wimbledon's notoriously strict all-white dress code less as a limitation and more as a frame for everything the rules don't cover, particularly her nails.

She paired the look with a custom Nike set from the brand's Heritage collection, an eyelet-covered skirt and top referencing her own '90s-era on-court style, small hoop earrings, and her daughters Olympia and Adira cheering from the stands alongside Ohanian.

And a watch that quietly outshone the rest

Away from the court, Williams also stepped out ahead of the tournament in an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore, a diamond-set titanium chronograph in a pink "Méga Tapisserie" dial finish, priced at roughly $45,900. The 37mm case combines a lightweight titanium build with the brand's signature alternating satin-brushed and hand-polished detailing, and a bezel set with 32 brilliant-cut diamonds.

Watch writers covering Wimbledon's off-court style this year flagged it as one of the standout pieces of the tournament so far; timepieces have quietly become their own fashion subplot at the All England Club, alongside the strict dress codes for both the grass courts and the Royal Box.

A first-round loss turned into one of the week's bigger fashion conversations, which, for Williams, appears to be part of the point.
