Sabyasachi returns to New York Fashion Week after 17 years, and says he never really left

The couturier will present his Spring/Summer 2027 collection on September 15, his first NYFW runway show since 2009, in what he calls a return built on patience rather than spectacle

Sabyasachi Mukherjee is going back to New York Fashion Week. According to the preliminary CFDA schedule, the designer will present his Spring/Summer 2027 collection on September 15, his first runway appearance at the event in 17 years.

He addressed the moment directly in an Instagram statement, pushing back gently on the framing of it as a comeback. "There's been a lot of conversation about my return to New York Fashion Week. The truth is, I never really left. I simply chose to build, quietly," he wrote.

Why he stepped away in the first place

Sabyasachi first showed at New York Fashion Week in 2006 with a collection called Snail, built around the idea of slow fashion before the term existed in mainstream luxury circles. He returned in 2009 with a ready-to-wear collection adapted from an earlier Mumbai showing, heavy on hand embroidery and beadwork layered into international silhouettes. Critics liked it. The market, by his own account, wasn't ready for him yet.

He's spoken about that period before, describing it as a lesson in timing as much as design, and has credited fashion journalist Suzy Menkes with a piece of advice he's held onto since: go home, build the brand in India until it can command the market rather than chase it, and only return once that's true.

A pushback on fashion's current pace

In the same statement, Sabyasachi took aim at where he thinks the industry has drifted.

"The older I get, the more I value substance over noise. Today, fashion seems increasingly driven by engagement and velocity. Somewhere along the way, the clothes can become secondary to the spectacle," he wrote, a pointed comment on an industry now largely shaped by virality and turnover speed rather than the work itself.

He also used the moment to push back on how India tends to be read from the outside. "I believe the world often misunderstands India. Beneath what is sometimes seen as pomp and pageantry lies a modern country with a wise soul," he said, tying that idea directly to his own design philosophy: that quality outlasts novelty, craftsmanship outlasts performance, and permanence is the real luxury.

Coming back on his own terms

Nearly two decades on, that patience looks like it's paid off. Sabyasachi has since built a label spanning bridal couture, fine jewellery, accessories, and lifestyle, opened a flagship in New York's West Village, and dressed everyone from Bollywood's biggest names to Oprah.

He's also kept his distance from the traditional fashion week calendar in recent years, favouring Instagram drops over seasonal shows, which makes any full-scale presentation an event by default.

By his own telling, the September showcase won't lean on spectacle either. True to the substance-over-noise line running through his statement, the presentation is shaping up to be intentionally understated, craftsmanship placed front and centre rather than staged as a production.

What exactly the collection will look like is still under wraps, but the show is already being talked about as one of the bigger moments on this year's NYFW calendar, arriving at a point when Indian luxury fashion more broadly has been finding a much larger audience internationally.
