Museum of Solutions, Mumbai: The interactive museum redefining learning for children

Museums are among the most popular destinations during summer vacations. From national museums to science centres, families often visit several places where children learn about history, culture and science.

However, for many children, museums are often seen as dull spaces filled with information panels, oversized displays and exhibits they are not allowed to touch. As a result, the experience can sometimes feel more overwhelming than exciting.

What if a museum encouraged children to learn by doing rather than simply observing?

This museum in Mumbai is doing exactly that. Museum of Solutions, popularly known as MuSo, is designed as an interactive learning space for children. The museum combines play, creativity, science and real-world problem-solving under one roof.

Why the Museum of Solutions stands out

Located in Lower Parel, Mumbai, MuSo opened in late 2023 and quickly gained international recognition. In 2024, it was featured on TIME magazine's list of the World's Greatest Places.

The museum also became the first Indian museum to win the prestigious Hands On! Children in Museums Award in 2024, competing against institutions from 17 countries.

Speaking to TIME magazine, founder Tanvi Jindal Shete said, "We are unique in the world because of the amount of importance we place on children's voices."

Spread across 1,00,000 square feet and five exhibit floors, the museum focuses on child-led, curiosity-driven learning.

A museum designed around innovative learning

MuSo was created in response to concerns that many children continue to learn through rote memorisation and traditional classroom methods.

Ahead of the opening in 2023, Shete said, “Learning can no longer be confined to a transfer of facts, but needs to be an immersive journey of discovery and joy,” as reported by Hindustan Times.

Its programmes are built around three key ideas: inspire, enable and empower.

The museum encourages children to explore issues they care about and find solutions through hands-on activities. Many exhibits are inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including themes such as gender equality, sustainable cities and clean energy.

What can you expect to see?

The museum offers several dedicated spaces designed around different interests and age groups.

The Library of Solutions on the sixth floor houses educational resources, books and a quiet reading zone for children.

The seventh-floor Play Lab introduces children to STEAM learning through interactive exhibits and workshops focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

On the ninth floor, the Make Lab encourages children to create and test their own ideas. The Discover Lab focuses on water, marine ecosystems, climate and ecology.

The terrace-level Grow Lab focuses on nature and sustainability. Children can learn about biodiversity, vegetable farming, beekeeping and other environmental topics.

One of MuSo's most popular and unique attractions is VROOM, described as India's first interactive automotive experience for children.

The floor has been designed like a garage where children can work on engineering-based projects, experiment with ideas and learn how innovation shapes the world around them.

Summer Camps and Workshops for Children

Apart from its permanent exhibits, MuSo organises workshops and seasonal programmes throughout the year.

What visitors should know before planning a visit

The timings of the Museum of Solutions are available on their website. Tickets are available online as well as at the venue. Advance booking is recommended, particularly during weekends, public holidays and school vacation periods when visitor numbers tend to be higher.

The main museum galleries remain closed on Mondays. On weekdays, the exhibit floors are open from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, while weekend and public holiday hours extend until 7:00 pm. VROOM  remains open until 8:00 pm on operational days. The Library of Solutions welcomes visitors daily between 10:00 am and 6:30 pm.

Children aged two years and above can visit the museum with adults, although some exhibits and activities are designed for specific age groups.

MuSo is within walking distance of both the Century Mill BEST bus stop and Prabhadevi railway station. The venue is also accessible for wheelchair users and visitors with mobility aids.
