Gir National Park lion cub deaths highlight a growing conservation challenge in a warming world

The recent deaths of eight Asiatic lion cubs in Gujarat's Gir landscape sparked concern among conservationists and wildlife officials, with early reports pointing to a possible outbreak of Babesia, a tick-borne disease that affects red blood cells.

However, subsequent investigations have painted a different picture.

According to Gujarat Forest Minister Arjun Modhwadia, the cubs did not die from Babesia infection or any major viral outbreak. Instead, the deaths were linked to extreme heat and the physical stress it places on vulnerable animals. Officials said the cubs that died had lower immunity and were unable to withstand the harsh weather conditions.

The clarification has eased fears of a large-scale disease outbreak, but it has also raised a different question: how prepared are India's wild animals for increasingly extreme weather conditions?

Why heat can be deadly for wildlife

Heatwaves are often discussed in relation to human health, but they can be equally dangerous for wildlife.

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause dehydration, physiological stress and weakened immune responses in animals. Young cubs, elderly animals, and individuals already dealing with poor health are particularly vulnerable.

Extreme heat can also reduce hunting activity, increase competition around water sources and make it harder for animals to recover from minor illnesses or injuries.

In Gir, officials initially suspected Babesia because some lions showed symptoms associated with weakness and poor health. As a precaution, veterinary teams launched extensive monitoring, quarantine measures, de-ticking operations and health checks across the lion landscape. Several lions that were isolated during the response have since recovered and returned to the wild.

A conservation success story facing new challenges

The Asiatic lion remains one of India's greatest conservation achievements.

Once pushed to the brink of extinction, the species has made a remarkable recovery in Gujarat. The 2025 lion census recorded 891 Asiatic lions across the Gir landscape and surrounding districts, a substantial increase from previous decades. Today, lions are found not only inside protected forests but also across parts of Amreli, Gir Somnath and Bhavnagar districts.

However, the success story comes with new challenges.

As lion numbers increase, so does their exposure to environmental pressures. The animals now occupy a wider landscape that includes agricultural areas, villages and regions vulnerable to extreme weather. Conservation is no longer only about preventing poaching or protecting habitat. It increasingly involves understanding how climate-related stresses affect wildlife populations.

The bigger lesson from Gir

The recent deaths also highlight the importance of evidence-based conservation.

When the cub deaths were first reported, concerns quickly focused on Babesia and memories of the 2018 outbreak involving Canine Distemper Virus and secondary infections that killed multiple lions in Gir. The possibility of another disease event understandably caused alarm.

But the latest findings demonstrate why scientific investigation is crucial before concluding. Wildlife deaths can result from a range of factors, including disease, injury, environmental stress and natural causes. Understanding the actual cause is essential for designing the right response.

In this case, the challenge appears to have been environmental rather than infectious.

As heatwaves become more frequent and intense across parts of India, conservation experts may increasingly need to factor climate resilience into wildlife management strategies. Monitoring water availability, tracking animal health and responding quickly during extreme weather events could become just as important as disease surveillance.

The Gir lion deaths may not have been caused by a dangerous parasite, but they still offer an important warning. As temperatures rise, protecting wildlife will require adapting conservation efforts to a changing climate—one in which extreme heat may become a growing threat to even the most celebrated conservation success stories.
