Across the world, there are places where two major bodies of water meet and appear to form a sharp dividing line - one side darker, the other lighter, as if the oceans refuse to blend.

These breathtaking sights have become viral online, often described as places where “two oceans meet but don’t mix”.

However, the reality is more fascinating than the myth. Ocean waters do mix, but differences in temperature, salinity, density, currents and sediment levels can slow the process and create visible boundaries that look like two separate worlds.

1. Gulf of Alaska, USA: The viral 'two oceans' phenomenon

The Gulf of Alaska is perhaps the most famous example associated with the “two oceans don’t mix” claim. Images showing a dramatic line between blue and green waters have circulated widely online, but scientists say the explanation is not two oceans refusing to mix.

The visible divide is mainly caused by glacial meltwater carrying large amounts of sediment flowing into the Pacific Ocean.

The sediment-rich water creates a colour contrast with the clearer ocean water, producing the famous boundary effect. Over time, the waters do mix through currents and turbulence.

2. Cape Horn, Chile: Where the Atlantic and Pacific meet

At the southern tip of South America, near Cape Horn, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet.

This region is known for powerful currents, strong winds and some of the most challenging sailing conditions on Earth.

Unlike the viral images suggesting a permanent barrier, the two oceans are connected and continuously exchange water. The meeting point is shaped by ocean currents rather than a visible line where waters remain separate.

At Grenen, near the town of Skagen in Denmark, visitors can witness waves from the North Sea and Baltic Sea meeting at a narrow point.

The two waters appear to push against each other because they have different densities, temperatures and salinity levels.

The Strait of Gibraltar is one of the world’s most important ocean gateways, connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

Here, the waters behave differently because the Mediterranean is much saltier due to high evaporation. Atlantic water flows into the Mediterranean at the surface, while denser Mediterranean water flows outward underneath, creating a complex exchange system rather than a simple meeting point.

Why do some waters look like they don’t mix?

Some waters appear not to mix because of differences in salinity, temperature, density, currents and sediment content.

When two water bodies with different characteristics meet, they may form a visible boundary for a period of time before gradually blending.

For example, glacier meltwater or rivers can carry fine sediments that change the colour of the water, creating a sharp contrast with clearer ocean water. Similarly, warm and cold currents or freshwater and saltwater layers can move at different speeds and densities, making the transition between them appear like a clear dividing line.

However, oceans and seas are constantly moving systems, and these waters do eventually mix through waves, tides, currents and natural circulation.
