Kolkata RG Kar case: CBI chargesheet says Sanjay Roy 'raped, murdered' doctor, rules out gangrape

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday filed its first charge sheet in Kolkata rape and murder case and booked the main accused Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor in state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

In the chargesheet filed before a special court in Kolkata, the CBI said Roy, who was working as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, allegedly committed the crime on August 9 when the victim had gone to sleep in the seminar room of the hospital during a break.

The probe agency, however, did not mention the charge of gang rape, indicating that Roy alone committed the crime.

Roy used to frequently visit the hospital and on the day of the crime, he was seen in CCTV footage entering the seminar room at 4.03 am. He exited the room after around half an hour.

The Kolkata police also found his Bluetooth headphones at the crime scene.

The CBI further said that the investigation of destruction of evidence in the rape and murder case is still underway.

A report by NDTV quoted sources in the CBI as saying that the statements of about 200 people have been recorded in the charge sheet that names Roy.

Protests erupted across Kolkata and West Bengal demanding just for the 31-year-old woman trainee doctor who was raped and murdered inside the hospital's seminar room where she had gone to rest during her night shift. Her body was found the next morning by a junior doctor.

The post-mortem report confirmed that she had been raped and murdered and also revealed 25 internal and external injuries to her body.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to take over RG Kar rape and murder case from Kolkata Police, citing lapses that "leave room for suspicion".

Roy was subjected to a lie-detector test where he claimed innocence. He claimed that when he entered the seminar hall on August 9, the victim was already unconscious.
