The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has proposed Rahul Gandhi's name for the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, as confirmed by senior party figure KC Venugopal on Saturday.
Venugopal, speaking at a press briefing, said, "CWC unanimously requested Rahul Gandhi to take the position of the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha...Rahul ji is the best person to lead this campaign inside the Parliament."
In response to inquiries regarding Gandhi's acceptance of the role, Venugopal, the Congress general secretary overseeing the organisation, said he will announce his decision soon.
Venugopal said the atmosphere in the CWC is much better now than it was four months ago because the party is doing well, emphasising that its revival has begun.
Congress Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari endorsed Gandhi's candidacy for Leader of the Opposition, asserting, "Definitely he (Rahul Gandhi) should become (LoP in Lok Sabha). This was the request of our working committee. He is fearless and courageous."
The CWC resolution lauded Rahul Gandhi for his contributions during the election campaign, particularly highlighting the impactful Bharat Jodo Yatra and Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. It credited Gandhi for 'saving the nation's Constitution' and stressed on the resonance of the PaanchNyay-Pachees Guarantee program.
Acknowledging the hurdles ahead despite the party's electoral progress, the CWC affirmed its commitment to restoring the Congress to its former prominence in the country's political landscape.
Notable attendees at the extended Congress Working Committee meeting included Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Manish Tewari, DK Shivakumar, and Revanth Reddy, among others.
