President Droupadi Murmu gives assent to Women's reservation bill

President Droupadi Murmu Friday gave assent to the Women's Reservation Bill.The new, officially called ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’, law gives 33 per cent reservation to women in the legislature, both in the Parliament and state Assemblies.Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar signed the bill, which was presented earlier this month only, earlier today before it was sent to President Murmu for her assent.Although the president’s assent has enacted the bill as law, it will take some time to implement. The seats to be reserved for women would only be finalised after the next census and the subsequent delimitation.Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week said that this is not a normal law but it is the proclamation of a new democratic commitment to a new India.“Some decisions have the capability to change the country’s future and we are witness to one such decision,” says PM Modi“The coming generations will discuss this decision. I congratulate the country on the passage of ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ in the Parliament with a majority,” PM Modi said while addressing Nari Shakti Vandan-Abhinandan Karyakram at BJP headquarters in Delhi.
