OpenAI on Sunday formally appointed former Uber India and South Asia President Prabhjeet Singh as its Managing Director for India.

Singh will join OpenAI in September and will be the company's most senior executive in India. He will report to OpenAI's Asia Pacific Managing Director, Kiran Mani, and lead the company's operations across the country.

The appointment reflects OpenAI's growing focus on India, which has emerged as its second-largest market with more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users. As artificial intelligence adoption accelerates across industries, the company is strengthening its leadership team to drive growth.

Key responsibilities in India

As Managing Director, Singh will oversee OpenAI's consumer growth, enterprise adoption, strategic partnerships, regulatory engagement and overall business operations in India.

It also opened its first office in New Delhi in November 2025, highlighting India's strategic importance in its global growth plans.

Nearly a decade at Uber

Before joining OpenAI, Singh spent nearly ten years at Uber, where he held several leadership positions.

He joined the ride-hailing company in 2015 as Head of Strategy and steadily rose through the ranks before becoming President for India and South Asia. In that role, he led Uber's mobility business across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Uber confirmed last week that Singh had stepped down after more than a decade with the company.

Prior to Uber, Singh worked with Lehman Brothers in London as a Senior Analyst before joining McKinsey & Company as a Senior Associate, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Strong academic background

Prabhjeet Singh is an alumnus of two of India's premier educational institutions. He completed his engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur and later earned an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad.

His appointment comes at a time when OpenAI is rapidly expanding its footprint in India through enterprise partnerships, developer outreach and policy engagement.
