Rubio discovers just how hot India is: Delhi, Agra and Jaipur sizzle during US secretary’s visit

Two days after facing the Delhi heat, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday faced the scorching summer in Agra where the temperature soared to 45 degrees Celsius.

Rubio's next stop is Jaipur, which is also in the grips of a heatwave.

At the US embassy, Rubio on Saturday admitted that while he was used to his hometown Miami's heat, the summer in Delhi was on an entirely different level.

“Although I'm from Miami, there is a humid hot and then there's this hot," said Rubio.

Wondering out loud why the temperature was not dropping with time, Rubio further said: "What time is it? It should be getting cooling off by now!"

At the time, Delhi recorded the maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius. For comparison, Miami's highest-ever temperature was recorded at 38 degrees Celsius in 1942.

India is currently in the grips of a severe heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are expected in central and northwest India throughout this week and in eastern and peninsular India for the next three to five days.

In the midst of such a heatwave, Rubio visited the Taj Mahal at Agra. His next stop is Amer Fort at Jaipur.

At Agra, the maximum temperature is forecast to be 45 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature at Jaipur is forecast to be 43.6 degrees Celsius.

In Delhi, where Rubio will eventually return for tomorrow's Quad ministerial meeting, the maximum temperature is forecast to be in the 43-45 degrees Celsius range today and tomorrow, according to the IMD.

On his return to Delhi, Rubio will meet foreign ministers of the Quad countries tomorrow — External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi.
