Lok Sabha Security Breach: BJP MP Khagen Murmu was speaking when 2 men disrupted Parliament

In a major security breach during Zero Hour in Parliament on Wednesday afternoon, two men, both carrying smoke canisters emitting an unidentified yellow smoke, jumped from the visitors’ gallery and ran amok inside the Lok Sabha.Footage from the House’s CCTV system showed one man, wearing a dark blue shirt, leaping across desks to avoid being captured, while his accomplice remained in the visitors’ gallery spraying smoke. Later, both men were overpowered by several MPs and Parliament security staff. The incident happened when Khagen Murmu, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from West Bengal was addressing the ongoing winter session of the parliament.Khagen Murmu of the BJP was addressing the House when the security breach occurred and the two men jumped down from the visitor's gallery. Murmu hails from Malda (North) in West Bengal.Murmu, 63, is a first time Member of Parliament and started his current term in May 2019, when he was elected to the Lok Sabha.Earlier, he served four terms as a MLA from Habibpur constituency as a member of CPI(M) from 2001 to 2019. Murmu is a Santhali leader. He was first elected from Habibpur constituency as a member of CPI(M) in 2001. In 2019, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and won the general elections from Malda (North) constituency.Earlier this year, Khagen Murmu representing the Malda North constituency had been booked by the police in connection with a road blockade and alleged vandalism of a police outpost. Murmu and the local BJP unit had denied the charges and alleged that the police were acting at the behest of the Trinamool Congress.On Wednesday, BJP member Rajendra Agrawal, who was in the chair, adjourned the proceedings as soon as the disruption happened.The incident comes on the 22nd anniversary of the deadly 2001 Parliament attack. Police personnel later said that the incident was not linked to the earlier Parliament attack.The House has resumed proceedings after being adjourned.
