Kolkata: David Cameron visits Howrah Bridge, Dalhousie Square

Kolkata: British Prime Minister David Cameron today visited Howrah Bridge, the iconic landmark of the metropolis, which was once the seat of power of the British Raj.[caption id="attachment_1229975" align="alignleft" width="380"] Britain Prime Minister David Cameron. PTI[/caption]Cameron drove on the 705-metre cantilever bridge, which was opened to the public in February 1943 over the river Hooghly, and halted briefly, taking in the sights of the river.The bridge, which has featured in numerous films, connects Kolkata with Howrah across the river. The banks of the river in the vicinity of the bridge have been beautified in the recent years.The British Premier also drove through the heritage Dalhousie Square where numerous buildings of the British era, including Writers' Buildings, exist. The square is now known as BBD Bagh.He also went to the All India Radio station for an interview.West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed a desire to transform Kolkata into London and develop Hooghly river on the lines of the Thames.Cameron is here on a brief trip en route to Colombo from Delhi.PTI
