Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was accorded a grand ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly received the Japanese leader upon her arrival, where she was honoured with a traditional Guard of Honour. Following the formal ceremony, PM Modi and Prime Minister Takaichi introduced each other to their respective ministerial delegations before heading to Hyderabad House to commence the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit.

A milestone for strategic partnership

Prime Minister Takaichi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday evening for her maiden three-day official visit to India since taking office, where she was received by Minister of State Jitendra Singh.

Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi expressed his delight in hosting the Japanese Prime Minister, stating that he looked forward to wide-ranging talks that would "further strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership while advancing peace, stability, and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific."

$12.5 billion investment and core focus areas

The flagship annual summit serves as the ultimate platform driving the bilateral agenda between the two economic powerhouses. According to Japanese media reports, Japanese private enterprises are poised to inject a staggering $12.5 billion into the booming Indian market, spanning approximately 120 cooperation agreements aligned with the summit.

The high-level discussions between PM Modi and Takaichi are expected to focus heavily on:

Building resilient supply chains across priority sectors including semiconductors, critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, and AI.

Deepening joint military exercises and strengthening collaboration under the Quad framework to ensure a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP).

Reviewing mega projects like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train and discussing a potential Rupee-Yen settlement framework to streamline bilateral trade.

Following their bilateral talks at Hyderabad House, the two leaders are scheduled to witness the signing and exchange of several key Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), followed by joint press statements. Prime Minister Takaichi will later address the India-Japan Business Forum at the Taj Palace before concluding her landmark visit and departing for Tokyo on Friday morning.
