Couple from north-east attacked in Gurgaon, Cong calls for action

A couple from the North-East was allegedly attacked by four men on Sunday in Nathupur, Gurgaon.The incident occurred late on Sunday evening, just days after a Manipuri man was found murdered in New Delhi's Kotla Mubarakpur.[caption id="attachment_1629497" align="alignleft" width="380"] Representational image of a candle-light protest by youngsters from the north east. AFP[/caption]Television reports said the assailants in the Sunday attack were armed with knives. The couple was rushed to a hospital in Gurgaon.Following the previous incident, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju described the attack on a native of the northeast as "serious and disturbing", and assured a thorough probe into the case.The incidence of hate crime against residents of the northeast has been on the rise in Delhi and the capital region, with the death of a 20-year-old student Nido Tania putting the issue into sharp focus. Tania hailed from Arunachal Pradesh was beaten to death in Delhi after an altercation with shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar.ANI reported that Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari reacted to Sunday night's incident by calling it unfortunate."It's extremely unfortunate these attacks on our people from the north-east. They are an integral part and parcel of our country. There is a need to give the people of the northeast a feeling of emotional unity. Whenever such incidents comes to light, swiftest actions must be taken against the culprits, to give our brethren from the north-east a feeling, that whichever is the government or the Indian state is as sensitive to their security as the security of anybody else," Tewari told ANI.
