CWG trial: Court fines CBI Rs.10,000 for filing fresh evidence

New Delhi, Dec 13 (IANS) Allowing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file additional documents in a corruption case related to Commonwealth Games (CWG), a special court Friday however slapped a fine of Rs.10,000 on the agency for taking the court for granted.

Observing that the court has alredy examined over 40 witnesses and recorded evidence of over 2,600 pages, special CBI judge Ravinder Kaur held that conduct of prosecution cannot be taken lightly and slapped the fine.

"In the interest of justice, the application of the prosecution is allowed, however, subject to exemplary cost of Rs.10,000 as the conduct of the prosecution in approaching the court at this belated stage for filing additional documents is not being appreciated," the court said.

The judge added that the prosecution is taking the court for granted.

The court was hearing a plea filed by CBI seeking permission to place on record two additional documents regarding payments made by CWG organising committee (OC) to ITDC/ARMS and Time Line Production for video coverage during Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly held here from Oct 4-14, 2009.

The CBI has alleged OC's former director general, V. K. Verma, facing trial in the case along with former chairman Suresh Kalmadi and others, had declared in the CGF general assembly on Oct 12, 2009 that timing, scoring and results (TSR) systems will be provided by Swiss Timing Ltd. However, till then not a single bid was received by any firm.

All the accused had opposed the plea saying that it was a "mischievous attempt" done by CBI.

Kalmadi and nine others are facing trial under the charges dealing with forgery, cheating and conspiracy in a corruption case related to the 2010 Games.
