PM Modi’s 5-nation push: Energy, trade and strategic alliances take centre stage amid Iran war shockwaves

As geopolitical tensions in West Asia intensify and the Iran conflict continues to send tremors through global energy markets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing for a critical five-nation diplomatic tour that could shape India’s economic and strategic positioning in the months ahead.

Between May 15 and 20, Modi will visit the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy in what is increasingly being viewed as a multidimensional mission centred around energy security, trade resilience and geopolitical balancing.

The timing of the tour is significant. The ongoing Iran war and rising instability around the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, have triggered fresh volatility in crude prices, pressured global currencies and reignited fears of supply-chain disruptions. For India, one of the world’s largest energy importers, the implications are enormous.

New Delhi imports nearly 90 per cent of its crude oil requirements and almost half of its gas demand. Rising oil prices threaten to widen India’s current account deficit, fuel imported inflation and place additional pressure on the rupee and foreign exchange reserves. Reuters reported that the Indian government and the Reserve Bank of India have already begun taking precautionary steps to manage market volatility and conserve foreign exchange buffers.

The urgency of the situation became evident after Modi publicly urged citizens to conserve fuel, reduce unnecessary imports, limit gold purchases and even avoid non-essential travel as part of a broader effort to shield the economy from external shocks.

Against this backdrop, the UAE emerges as the most strategically crucial stop on Modi’s itinerary. The Gulf nation remains one of India’s most important energy partners and a major source of crude supplies, investments and remittances. Modi is expected to hold discussions with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan focused on energy cooperation, regional stability and strengthening long-term strategic ties.

The significance of Abu Dhabi has grown further after the UAE’s evolving position within global oil diplomacy and its increasing role in shaping regional energy flows. For India, maintaining close ties with Gulf producers is becoming essential not just for oil access, but also for strategic stability in an era of geopolitical fragmentation.

However, the tour is not solely about fossil fuels. A major theme across the European leg of the visit is expected to be India’s long-term transition towards clean energy, advanced manufacturing and resilient supply chains.

In the Netherlands, discussions are likely to focus on semiconductors, green hydrogen, water management and high-tech industrial cooperation. As India attempts to reduce vulnerabilities exposed by global conflicts and supply disruptions, partnerships in advanced technology and critical infrastructure are gaining renewed importance.

Sweden and Norway, meanwhile, represent India’s growing push towards green transition technologies. During his Sweden visit, Modi will meet Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to discuss trade, artificial intelligence, clean technologies and resilient industrial supply chains.

The Norway leg is especially significant because it coincides with the India-Nordic Summit in Oslo. Nordic countries are global leaders in renewable energy, offshore technology, sustainability and Arctic research. India is expected to seek deeper collaboration in hydrogen ecosystems, maritime technologies, climate innovation and the blue economy.

For New Delhi, these partnerships are part of a broader strategic calculation. India recognises that future geopolitical influence will increasingly depend not only on access to oil, but also on dominance in clean energy technologies, semiconductors, rare earth supply chains and industrial innovation.

The final stop in Italy is expected to focus on defence manufacturing, industrial cooperation and accelerating the India-European Union trade agenda. With Europe also attempting to reduce strategic vulnerabilities exposed by wars and energy crises, India is positioning itself as a stable economic and geopolitical partner.

The broader message behind Modi’s tour is unmistakable: India is entering a phase where diplomacy, economics and energy security are becoming inseparable.

The Iran war has exposed the fragility of global supply chains and reminded policymakers worldwide that geopolitical conflicts can instantly destabilise economies thousands of kilometres away. For India, whose growth ambitions depend heavily on affordable energy and stable trade flows, strategic diplomacy is now becoming an economic necessity rather than a diplomatic luxury.

Whether this five-nation outreach succeeds in securing stronger energy partnerships, investment flows and strategic cooperation may play a crucial role in determining how effectively India navigates the emerging era of geopolitical and economic turbulence.
