Jio eyes sovereign satellite capability for India; Reliance Intelligence to power AI ambitions

Reliance Jio is gearing up for its next phase of digital expansion with a strong push into satellite connectivity and artificial intelligence (AI), Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm and Managing Director of Jio Platforms, said at the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2026.

Addressing shareholders, Akash Ambani said Jio is evaluating the development of a sovereign Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite capability for India as the company looks to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure and expand high-speed connectivity.

He said Jio is building the necessary ground station infrastructure to support its satellite connectivity ambitions. The company is also partnering with leading global satellite constellation providers to bring advanced space-based communication services to India.

The move comes as satellite broadband emerges as a key technology to provide reliable connectivity across remote locations and support future digital applications. A sovereign satellite capability could further strengthen India’s control over critical communication networks.

Alongside its satellite plans, Reliance is also accelerating its artificial intelligence roadmap through Reliance Intelligence, which aims to build a strong AI foundation for India. The initiative focuses on creating AI infrastructure and solutions that can support consumers, enterprises and developers.

Reliance’s AI push is expected to combine advanced computing infrastructure, digital platforms and technology partnerships to make AI services more accessible across the country.

Jio, which disrupted India’s telecom market by making mobile data affordable, is now looking at emerging technologies including AI and satellite connectivity to drive its next phase of growth.

The announcements highlighted Reliance’s ambition to expand beyond traditional telecom services and strengthen India’s position in next-generation technologies, with space-based internet and artificial intelligence forming key pillars of its future strategy.
