India, US push trade talks forward as Goyal hails ‘constructive’ discussions

India and the United States have stepped up efforts to advance negotiations on a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), with Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and US Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Jamieson Greer holding a series of high-level discussions in New Delhi.

Greer visited New Delhi from June 22–24, 2026, leading an official US delegation. The visit marked a crucial step in ongoing efforts to work towards a balanced and mutually beneficial India-US trade agreement and finalise an interim deal in line with the joint statement issued on February 7, 2026.

Taking to X, Goyal said he concluded a series of meetings with Ambassador Greer and his delegation, where both sides reviewed the progress of ongoing India-US trade discussions and explored ways to deepen the economic partnership.

“I appreciate Ambassador Greer’s leadership and the sustained efforts of both teams in advancing our discussions in a constructive and forward-looking manner,” Goyal said.

During the meetings, Goyal and Greer conducted a comprehensive review of key elements of the proposed BTA, including enhanced market access, digital trade, supply chain resilience, reduction of non-tariff barriers and greater cooperation in strategic sectors.

Both sides acknowledged substantial progress made by negotiating teams in recent months and welcomed the momentum generated through successive technical and ministerial-level engagements. The discussions focused on possible pathways to conclude an interim agreement, seen as a key milestone towards a comprehensive trade pact.

India and the US reaffirmed their commitment to finalising an agreement that is balanced, commercially meaningful and delivers tangible benefits for businesses, farmers, workers and consumers in both countries.

Recognising the growing importance of the India-US economic partnership amid shifting global trade dynamics, both sides reiterated their shared goal of expanding bilateral trade, fostering innovation and building trusted and resilient supply chains.

The two countries expressed confidence that continued negotiations will further strengthen economic ties and deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

In a post on X, Goyal said the two sides discussed the current state of trade negotiations and explored avenues to further strengthen the economic partnership between the two countries.

“Concluded a series of meetings with @USTradeRep Ambassador Jamieson Greer and his delegation this morning. We reviewed the progress of the ongoing India–U.S. trade discussions and explored avenues to further deepen our economic partnership,” Goyal wrote.

The minister also appreciated Ambassador Greer’s leadership and the sustained efforts of negotiating teams from both sides, saying the discussions were moving ahead in a “constructive and forward-looking manner.”

The latest engagement comes as New Delhi and Washington continue efforts to expand bilateral trade cooperation and address key issues to strengthen their economic relationship.
