Mobiles? I am not interested in using them, say over 50-year-olds in India

Mobiles are the fastest connectivity link to the world. But India’s ageing population is still fighting shy of using it, according to a survey by the Norway-based Telenor Group, which has mobile operations in 13 markets internationally. In India, it operates under the brand name Uninor.In India, only 10 percent of Telenor’s 45.6 million subscribers are over 45 years of age.The report throws up interesting results:

• Of the mobile phone users in India overall, only 6 percent are over 50 years of age. This difference is exacerbated for mobile data users, with only 1 percent being 50 years or older.
• Non-data users have a lower income profile and higher age than the average mobile user.
• The reason offered for not using mobile data is simple: Utility and complexity of services as perceived by the consumers
• And worse: 29 percent say they see no reason to use the mobile internet, while 24 percent find it `too complicated’.
• Basic and feature phones are prevalent among elderly
