Watch: 'Kapoor & Sons' trailer is as star-studded as K3G, but funnier, edgier

From the look of it, the latest Karan Johar production Kapoor & Sons is an outright winner. It gives the theme of a dysfunctional family an entirely new definition… and direction.This is second film by director Shakun Batra, four years after his quirky rom-com Ek Main Aur Tu for Karan Johar.Kapoor & Sons, which opens next month is far bigger in scale, funnier and designed, albeit in an unselfconscious way, to give its very handsome cast a chance to battle it out with one another in a scenic hill station.[caption id="attachment_2621562" align="alignleft" width="380"] Screengrab from Kapoor & Sons trailer. The extremely talented Rajat Kapoor almost throws a bowl of popcorn on his screen wife Ratna Pathak Shah after she accuses him of being quite happy if she was marched off to a loony bin.To be honest, it doesn’t seem like a bad idea.At one point an angry Siddharth Malhotra hurls an object at Fawad Khan. The two play brothers who come together after five years, and they look their parts as siblings.Alia Bhatt is the woman — no, make that child-woman — who seems to be attracted to both the guys. I assume since Mr Malhotra has an edge in real life vis-à-vis the sought-after Ms Bhatt, Mr Khan gets the upper hand here.Hot or not. The trailer is edgy. Everyone, except the outsider Alia, seems on the brink. This is the kind of family film that Karan Johar’s directorial Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham could never have been. Where has all the sweetness from the joint-family gone? Kapoor & Sons is a reminder of all the undercurrents of hostility that are nurtured when a family has an abundance of glamour, wealth and wit that they have forgotten to invest into their in-house relationship.If it’s not objects then it’s stinging words and invectives being hurled. The funniest most shriveling line in this enormously watchable trailer comes from Rishi Kapoor playing the wizened grandfather. While being photographed the photographer comments that if his grandmother was alive he would have definitely set her up with the senior Kapoor.“Kyon, tumhari Mummy nahin hai kya?” drawls Rishi Kapoor, as only he can.Let’s hope there is a lot of such inimitable Mr Rishi Kapoor in the film and that the film doesn’t squander the opportunity to play up its astonishing star cast in exchange of a mundane love triangle about two brothers in love with the same spunky girl. Kapoor & Sons promises a lot more.
