Slovakia bolsters security at border with Hungary amid migration surge

The government said on Wednesday that Slovakia will temporarily install restrictions on its border with Hungary due to an increase in the number of unauthorised immigrants. This is in response to checks that the Czech Republic and Poland have implemented on Slovak borders.This year, the number of illegal immigrants entering Slovakia from Hungary on their way to Germany and Western Europe has increased by an astounding eleven times. The majority of these migrants are from the Middle East and Afghanistan.According to a government order, Slovakia will conduct border checks on its border with Hungary starting on Thursday and continuing for ten days.They follow actions taken on Wednesday to impose temporary controls on their borders with Slovakia by neighbours the Czech Republic, Poland, and Austria.According to the administration, almost 40,000 unauthorised immigrants have entered Slovakia since the year's beginning. The number of illegal immigrants was higher in September alone than it was in all of 2022.(With agency inputs)
