IDF says it's using AI to 'quickly identify and strike Hamas targets'

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) is using artificial intelligence (AI) to quickly identify and strike Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.

So far, IDF has identified some 1,200 new Hamas targets across the Strip, the Military Intelligence Directorate said as the military continues working to produce new targets “on a large scale.”

A senior official said that the IDF is using new tools for the first time to provide ground forces with updated information on targets to strike in Gaza.

Since Hamas launched an all-out offensive against Israel on October 7, the country has been incorporating AI into its military doctrine.

For example, the Iron Dome, a defence system that uses radar technology, was primarily designed to intercept short-range rockets and mortars targeted at Israel. Its operation involves the utilization of predictive analytics and machine learning to identify and neutralize incoming projectiles.

Meanwhile, Israeli tanks and troops pressed towards Gaza City on Thursday but met fierce resistance from Hamas militants using mortars and hit-and-run attacks from tunnels as the Palestinian death toll from nearly four weeks of bombardments mounted.

The war is closing in on the Gaza Strip's main population centre in the north, where the Islamist group is based. Israel has been telling people to leave the area as it vows to annihilate Hamas once and for all.
