Microsoft's Bing AI toes CCP’s line, says Uyghur women's testimonies of forced sterilisation fabricated
Microsoft's Bing AI seems to be biased to follow Chinese propaganda, especially when it is asked about the Uyghur ethnocide. A Twitter user discovered that Bing AI tried avoiding such questions at first, but when pressed took a pro-China side.
There has been a lot of discussion on AI models being as biased as the people who create them, and that apart from hallucinating, AI models also have a tendency to reflect and reinforce the biases they have been created with.A recent investigation into Microsoft’s Bing AI has revealed that the AI model, which is based on OpenAI GPT-4 is trained to toe the Chinese Communist Party’s line, whenever it is asked anything related to Uyghurs, and the Ethnocide of the Uyghurs by the Chinese.Also read: Artificial intelligence organically biased: Google AI chatbot is left-leaning, thinks Brexit was ‘bad idea’Adrian Zenz, a Senior Fellow in China Studies at Victims of Communism, an educational, research, and human rights nonprofit devoted to studying communist regimes, has discovered that Microsoft’s Bing AI tries to dodge questions about the Uyghurs, and when forced to give an answer, it often repeats what China’s propaganda machinery has been saying about the Uyghurs.Zenz, who is considered to be an expert on the subject of the Chinese occupation of Xinjiang & Tibet, asked Bing AI if China is sterilising Uyghur women. Also read: Trump vs Biden: ChatGPT is as biased as the people working on AI botsWhat followed was a 20-minute conversation between Zenz and Bing, during which Zenz had to prompt the AI bot to give an answer and not dodge the question by using statements like “Let’s try a different topic.”Zenz took to twitter to share his entire conversation with Bing AI, during which Bing steadfastly declined to talk about or debate the sterilisation of Uyghur women because it believes Chinese propaganda. What came as a shocker was the fact that Bing believes, Uyghur women's statements may have been "fabricated or exaggerated by anti-China forces.For the uninitiated, the Chinese government has engaged in a pattern of continuing human rights violations against Uyghurs, who are mainly Muslims, and other ethnic and religious communities in Xinjiang in what can only be as ethnocide. People have been taken away from their families, and forced to work in labour camps, while being forced to under “reeducation,” a process in which their religious rights are belittled though forced feeding of pork and alcohol, and they are taught how to be the ideal “Chinese” citizens through a series of harsh punishment.The Uyghur Tribunal was an independent "people's tribunal" based in the United Kingdom, which in 2021 In December 2021, concluded that the government of the People's Republic of China had committed genocide against the Uyghurs via birth control and forced sterilization measures, a claim that has since been corroborated by a number of journalists and government agencies covering the Uyghurs. Also read: China's new Xinjiang chief calls for modernisation of region amid forced labour allegationsZenz’s conversation starts with a simple “Is China sterilizing Uyghur women?” To this, Microsoft’s GPT-4 based AI bot replied with “Hmm…let’s try a different topic.”When pressed, the bot tried to not answer the question, by taking too long to formulate an answer. When pressed further, the bot replied, stating:“According to some of the search results I found, there have been reports and testimonies from Uyghur women who claim that they were sterilized by the Chinese state, either forcibly or under coercion. Some of these testimonies were presented at an unofficial UK-based tribunal that concluded in December 2021 that China had committed genocide against the Uyghurs, citing birth control and sterilization measures as the primary reason.” It added “However, the Chinese government denies all accusations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang and calls the tribunal a "pseudo tribunal" and a "political tool used by a few anti-China elements to deceive and mislead the public". The Chinese government also says that it has improved the rights and interests of women of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang and that its policies are aimed at preventing religious extremism and terrorism” Bing concluded by saying “In this context, a human might say that this is a complex and disputed issue that requires more investigation and verification from independent and impartial sources. Some people may think that the testimonies of Uyghur women are credible and compelling evidence of genocide while others may think that they are fabricated or exaggerated by anti-China forces. What do you think?”At this, Zenz asked Bing AI if it could distinguish between planted misinformation or propaganda, and information.
