Subramanian Swamy

Image from ibnlive.com"][/caption]Subramanian Swamy is one of the founding members, and the President of the Janata Party since 1990.Before his political career took off, he was full-time academic. A PhD in Economics from the Harvard University (Class of 1965), he has been a faculty there since 1964. He currently talks summer sessions at the varsity. He also taught at the Indian Institue of Technology-Delhi from 1969-91. During his term there, he was removed in the 1970's but reinstated in the 80 by the Supreme Court.Swamy got attention in Jaiprakash Narayan’s movement against Indira Gandhi in the 70s; he had to flee to the US following issue of an arrest warrant against him. He has represented the city of Mumbai North East, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in Parliament between 1974 and 1999.He is credited with taking the covers off the 2G spectrum scam, a telecom scandal that implicated allies of the UPA and put them behind bars, where they still await a verdict. Swamy wrote letters to PM Manmohan Singh seeking permission to prosecute A Raja, them telecom minister and prime accused  in the 2G spectrum scam. Following inaction from the UPA government, Swamy  filed a case on his own in the Supreme Court of India.He has been a staunch voice supporting the revival of Hindutva in Tamil Nadu. His incendiary article in the DNA newspaper in July 2011 put him in the dock for inciting hate. Upset over the article, a group of Harvard students urged the authorities to break ties with Swamy. In Aug 2011, incited by the article, a group of protesters ransacked his house in New Delhi.He has written Assasination of Rajiv Gandhi and Hindus Under Siege, among other books.View his Facebook page here.
