Murdoch, patriarch of the media conglomerate News Corp said on 11 August 2011 that his deputy chairman Chase Carey is most likely to succeed him and not his son James Murdoch, as was expected. Murdoch will stay on even after allegations of phone hacking at the News of the World led to shutdown of the paper and arrests of senior editors at the paper.A Colgate and Harvard Business School graduate has worked for Rupert Murdoch twice. His first stint was from 1988 – 2003, during which Carey was one of the key people who launched Fox Sports Network and Fox News Network. From 2003 – 2009, he served as the CEO of DirecTV. Carey, known as an ace nogotiator, a tough guy — a bully — with the reputation of a “cleaner” took over as President and COO of News Corp in 2009.Following the phone hacking scandal, the Financial Times while speculating on the next successor, wrote:

News Corp runs like a medieval court, with princes falling in and out of favour and underlings trying to interpret the capricious king’s wishes. With succession again in question, Mr Carey may be the Prince Regent... He has not only outlasted other confidants, but has remained untainted by the UK scandal.
